Hello football followers,

Our season has kicked off with a healthy roll up to pre-season training with good consistent numbers. Our pre-season ‘friendly’ against the Rebels S.C. from Townsville was cancelled due to the possibility of them getting flooded in. We still made the best of the situation and had a mini tournament that was eventually won by JD, Waddo, Connor and co and some very dodgy refereeing!

The weekend of the March 6th sees us off to Leichardt who have kindly invited our 3 mens team to a hit out. It’ll be good to see our boys against opposition rather than each other and I’m sure all are keen to dust off the cobwebs and finally kick a ball in anger. We are also looking forward to encounters with Souths and Atherton in the following weeks which hopefully will lead us into the season proper match fit and raring to go.

‘Play the game for fun.’ My U10 coach said. And over the years that approach has never changed for me and hopefully the boys at the club approach it the same way.

Now, as we all know, too much fun won’t win you a season. But combine that with the competitive nature of any football player and what you have is a very competitive and very friendly little club called Edge Hill United F.C.

Go the Tigers!

Regards

Hello football followers,

My name is Rob Wales and I have been successful in gaining my second year as Head Coach at Edge Hill United Football Club for the 2010 season. I would dearly like to thank the committee and players for their support in 2009. Our success in 2009 has not been achieved alone. I would love to accept the accolades as head coach but it would be grossly unjust…kudos to Johnny Dillon, Steve Douglas, ‘Waddo’ and Deano (Come down and find out who these excellent coaches are.)

At the business end of 2009, we as a club had 5/5 in the Grand finals series: 2nd Division Men’s, Youth, Ladies, Reserve Men’s and Premier Men’s, a fantastic effort for the club. To our committee, ever present and dedicated volunteers, coaches, supporters, and of course loyal and enthusiastic players, a massive pat on the back for a job well done. Thank you!

In summary 2009:

Senior men’s (4th in Premiership, 6th 2008) were KO’d 2-1 in an extra time elimination semi-final to the eventual winners of the GF.

Reserve men’s (Premiership Winners, Grand Final Winners and undisputed champions of North Queensland: Crad Evans Winners).

The ladies (Grand Final Winners) were superb in winning a gripping GF.

(3-3 FT, 7-3 extra time. The written word does not do justice to the game that was played GF day (1.00am K.O., 32- 34 DEG. heat, maybe hotter?), simply outstanding!

The youthy lads were KO’d in the first weekend of the finals, but not without a fight! Well done boys.(Finalists)

The 2nd Div men’s, ‘huffer’s ‘n’ puffers, thirsty 3rd’s, fit ‘n’ unable, casualty ward: who knows what to call these invaluable members of a football club… I know …2nd Division Men’s Grand Finalists 2009. (10 team comp.!)

My personal approach to the beautiful game was instilled in me by my U10 coach way back in 1978 at Warriors S.C., Townsville, (my first ever season). ‘Play the game for fun.’, he said. And over the years that approach has never changed for me and hopefully the boys at the club approach it the same way.

Now, as we all know, too much fun won’t win you a season. But combine that with the competitive nature of any football player and what you have is a very competitive and very friendly little club called Edge Hill United F.C.

Edge Hill went into the Finals Series as the only team in the FNQ premier divisions with all 5 teams to make it into the finals, including The Premier Men’s, Reserve Men’s, 2nd Division Men’s, Ladies and Youth.

The second division kick off at home on a friday night, and was accompained by a massive turn out for the successfull junior presentation night. playing 4th place Douglas the best knew they had to be good in order to win. Gaining two goals in the first half the boys were able to hold on for the victory. They will now play dimbula at home on friday 18th.

After already taking the minor premiership trophy the reserve mens team were hungry for more. Scoring first the resevres continued to play. It wasn’t until the the last minute of the game, opponents Leichhardt were avble to snatch a goal to send them into extra time. Beginning to dominant in the extra period niether teams were able to get the crucial goal needed. Going into penalties the kick takers were as follows. 1st to shoot was Mdudzi (MD) Dube who slotted the ball perfectly into the net. 2nd was Paul (Rasta) Connelly, who if scored would take the lead for Edge Hill, after goalkepper Sam Ferguson made a terrific save. Sam soon had saved another almost unstoppable shot, before scoring the teams third to seal the win for Edge Hill and send them straight to the finals.

Ladies were the first to kick off in Mareeba on a big Sunday for Edge Hill, getting the crucial victory to send close rivals Stratford home with nothing. The win for the ladies gives them alot of confidence going into the next match against Leichhardt.

Straight after the ladies edge hill youth played against Leichhardt, to earn a spot to play Marlin Coast, however the young boys would have to do the job without Sam Hos and Shay Douglas. However the boys were unlucky and suffered a 3-0 loss.

The Premier Mens kicking off in the afternoon at 4 pm. Starting of slow, many wouldn’t realise what the game really meant for everybody. Mareeba were the first to score, getting a penalty and taking it straight down the middle. Mareeba were the team to score next as well, will the boys were half asleep. With minutes to go before the half ended, the time team talk suddenly changed when young midfielder shay douglas went on to score from a Robert Wales through ball. the second half kicked off and Edge Hill were unlucky not to score on a number of occasions. But it was Justin Corser who made the break through the defence to win a penalty for Edge Hill. Colin Hagbord took the penalty and scored with ease. The game was beginning to turn and the pace was much quicker, as the crowd began to enjoy the football Edge Hill played. Dominating the half it wasn’t until the last minute when Justin Corser found the determination to run through the defence and beat the keeper to score. 3-2 and Edge hill looked to hold the lead. More drama when the referee played 3 minutes extra time, which cause Curtis Cowles to stop the ball off the line to secure the victory. Winning 3-2 Edge hill won the club a Home elimination final game against Minor Premiers Marlin coast.

Going behind to an untlucky penalty in the first half, left the team going into halftime down. After bringing on Colin at the half, it wasn’t long before he hit the net, after causing the dolphins all sorts of problems. Edge Hill kept pushing and it was soon clear that they were in dominant form. The last ten minutes seen a series of corner kicks for the home team and on the last 20 seconds of the match John Dillon ran across to take the final corner of the match. Knocking a beautiful ball into a dangerous area, late substition Sam Hos won the header and flicked it towards Juni to score the winner. Well Done lads. Head Coach a player Robert Wales was dissappointed to be on the bench and watching against his ex club but surly pleased with the win.
